The Guaifenesin Treatment for Fibromyalgia What is the Guaifenesin Treatment for Fibromyalgia and How Can it Help Me? The guaifenesin treatment for fibromyalgia, developed by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand, has two important components. First, you must take the proper dosage of the medication guaifenesin on a daily basis. Second, you must not put topical salicylates on your skin or take medicines with salicyates in them, as salicylates are known to counteract the beneficial aspects of guaifenesin. By following these two aspects of the protocol, the result will be a slow but significant remission of your symptoms. Once your symptoms have improved, as long as you continue taking guaifenesin in the proper dosage you will continue to feel better. Who is R. Paul St. Amand, M.D.? Dr. St. Amand is an internist/endocrinologist and fibromyalgia specialist who is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA. He has more than 40 years of experience treating this disease, and in fact has fibromyalgia himself. Dr. St. Amand has been in complete remission for some time. He has co-authored, with his medical assistant Claudia Marek, a book entitled What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia.. It can be purchased in both online and local bookstores. How Did I Get Fibromyalgia? Dr. St. Amand believes that fibromyalgia is a genetic deficiency that does not allow the body to flush out excess phosphates. Instead these excess phosphates build up in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of fibromyalgia sufferers, making them ache and feel tired. Patients will most likely be able to trace older family members with osteoarthritis and younger family members with growing pains. Are My Children At Risk? In a word, yes. According to the theory put forward by Dr. St. Amand, since the disease is a genetic problem it is inherited. Children with both parents who carry this genetic deficiency will usually present with symptoms at a younger age. If even one parent has fibromyalgia, there is of course still a risk. What is Guaifenesin? Guaifenesin is a drug with practically no side effects that is commonly found in over the counter cough medicines. Fibromyalgia patients, however, take this drug in the pure pill form in the appropriate dosage. What are Salicylates? Salicylates are chemicals found in plants and in some synthetic substances such as salicylic acid. They are in many of our everyday products such as lotions, make-ups, lipsticks etc. Salicylates can also be found in some medications and vitamin supplements. Mint is a concentrated source of salicylates and so is aspirin. All topical salicylates and supplements or medicines with salicylates in them must be avoided absolutely and with no compromise for the guaifenesin to work. How Can I Learn More?
